Chicken Fried What? A New Food Crush

Chicken breast, marinated and baked, is a staple at our dinner table.  John usually makes it, and really knows what he's doing!  It's delicious.  When the kids were young and health wasn't much of a concern, I would coat and fry chicken legs, for traditional Fried Chicken.  Rolling them in beaten eggs, and then in seasoned flour with plenty of pepper, right before popping them in the hot oil.  So, anyhow, that is the method that is used on small beef steaks to come up with a dish I have never actually tasted, Chicken Fried Steak.  But my point, and I actually do have one, it that this morning I found out the the "Chicken Fried" method of cooking is not limited to Chicken or Steak - this morning for breakfast at one of my favorite Tulsa restaurants  Smoke On Cherry Street, I had Waffles with Chicken Fried Bacon.  Yep - Chicken Fried Bacon!  Was it good?  Well, for starters, it's Bacon, so yum - then it has this crunchy, peppery coating.    In fact it was so good that there aren't any pictures of it - it didn't stay on the plate long enough for the camera lens to focus.  Just one more good thing about Oklahoma!

  1. I have seen chicken fried steak on the menu, but never tried it. The bacon is something else - has to be scrumptious!

  2. Chicken fried steak is one of the things I most enjoyed introducing Bill to when I first brought him to Oklahoma. The white gravy ("That's not gravy, what's bechamel sauce...no it's not that either...") is an important part of the dish, too. Chicken fried bacon sounds rather like the Scots' tradition of deep fried Mars bars, deep fried ice cream, deep fried pizza. Sort like like emphasizing they have the unhealthiest food in Europe. But the bacon does sound yummy. Do try a chicken fried steak! They are delicious!

  3. Oh my goodness! I've not been there enough times to try that one yet! I grew up with a mother that made the BEST fried chicken in the world. I can't make it the same. Love the stuff but I don't eat it very often anymore. Grilled everything usually now. Mmmmmmm bacon anything!

  6. Bacon is one of my favorite foods and I can sorta imagine it chicken fried but don't think I'll try it. Frying it in maple syrup is about as exotic as I get. I have had chicken fried steak because Southerners will think of every excuse possible to fry food!

  7. Oh yeah, we love Chicken Fried Bacon. It is a hassle to make though.

You asked about my jeans from my latest post. I got them at Chico's for the bargain price of 14.99. They were 19.99 and when I got them an additional 30% off. They m may still have them.

  9. Hi Shelley - I do intend to try the Chicken Fried Steak soon. I know what Bill means about the confusion about Gravy - I was raised thinking that it had to be at least Tan colored. Talk about unhealthy, have you ever tried a Scotch Egg? Hard boiled egg, wrapped in Sausage and deep fat fried. Yum! I wonder if you can make it with Chicken sausage for a healthier egg?

  10. Hi Carla - I'm too old for much fried food - I would have to exercise for more hours in the day than there are hours in the day if I eat the way I did in my 20's today. Grilled tastes just fine to me most of the time. But when I eat out, I like to splurge.
I know what you mean about trying to make something that your mother made fantastically - my mother's Divinity Candy - amazing! And my mother-in-law's pie crust - perfection! Mine - inedible (usually).

  11. Hi Darla - I find that Bacon and Eggs for breakfast keeps me satisfied. After the holiday season, I change my diet for a few weeks and eat that way without very many "white" carbs. So Hash Brown Sweet Potatoes to go with it. Yum!

  12. Hi Simone - You're right - I am in Southern California right now. Coming back with an empty car, so send me your Trader Joe's shopping list and we can go out for Chicken Fried Bacon when I bring you the stuff.

  13. Hi again, Simone - I am finding it difficult to remember what I need at Trader Joe's, so maybe it's a case of needing to go up and down the aisles. But their White Balsamic Vinegar and Tea Tree Oil Body Wash and Shampoo are on my list.

  15. Hi Debbi - I guess Chicken Fried Baco would be hard to make. So I think I'll just try it when I can order it.
Thanks so much for the information on those jeans. They look like they cost 10 times that much. Usually my waist is too big for Chico's jeans, but for that sale price and how cute they are, I'm going to look for them. I loved their old "W fit" with the waist almost the same size as the hips, but they discontinued them over 5 years ago.
