Do you remember when Dads whistled? I mean whole songs. As in the 7 Dwarf's
Whistle While We Work song? There was one song called
Poor People Of Paris that was mainly whistling. I miss it. I blame the fluoridation of water. Well, what else? I could be wrong. Actually, I quite like being wrong - it relieves the monotony.
Oh, I remember Poor People of Paris. Now I'll be whistling that one in my head all weekend :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the memory ...
I remember too! Loved listening on my parents Silvertone record player. There was al album by Billy Vaughn that included it. Fluoridation. Didn't the DAR take a stand against it in the 60s, contending it was a Communist plot?
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny.
ReplyDeleteHi Patricia - I saw a Cardinal today at the Gilcrease Museum and thought of you immediately. I've seen plenty of bright blue birds, but this was my first Cardinal.
ReplyDeleteHi Sanda - I remember Silvertone record players. I didn't remember who the artist was, since I only ever heard the song on the radio. My grandparents were the ones with the record player and they favored less modern music. Funny you should mention the DAR, since my husband and I were on a sort of field trip as guests of one of the members of the DAR. We toured the George Washington Exhibit at one of the Tulsa Museums, The Gilcrease. Very well done. I remember them doing a lot of odd things in the past, so not sure what to do, as it seems that (on my French side) I am eligible to join.
ReplyDeleteI am always surprised by the people against fluoridation. What did the Russians have to gain by American children having better teeth?
Hi Cindy - Thanks! I always enjoy your writing too. If you get a chance, that George Washington Exhibit is pretty good. Replica of George on a big stuffed horse. And one of the sets of his teeth are there - not wood, after all.
ReplyDeleteSo excited you saw a Cardinal and thought of me! I feel my blog has Arrived, in a capital letter sort of way! woo hoo :))
ReplyDeletePS have never seen a cardinal myself, but live in hope...
Hi Beryl,
ReplyDeleteThe DAR, and some right-wing political groups, thought water fluoridation was a form of "socialized medicine." Read this 1958 article from the Deseret News:

It's fun seeing the ads from that time as well!
Hi Sanda - Where did you find such an article? Very funny, but not at the time, I'm sure.
