Pumpkin Spice Cookies With Brown Butter Icing - It's That Time Again!

Everyone who knows me knows that I hate Daylight's Saving Time!  I have at least a month of the worst time getting acclimated, whether it's "Springing Forward" or "Falling Back".  So on Sunday, I spent the day doing one of my favorite things - baking up my best seasonal cookie - Pumpkin Spice Cookies With Brown Butter Icing from Lovejoy Bakers in Portland, Oregon..  So sweet of them to share their recipe - but I always use fresh roasted sugar pumpkins and only half as much of the Ground Cloves.  And I could only find Whole Wheat Pastry Flour in Tulsa, so mine might be a little healthier.  Actually only half of mine are made with the Whole Wheat Flour (the prettier ones); I used just plain white flour for the other half.  I love these and need to get them out of the house before I eat them all.  So far, I've  sent off a few packages of them - one to my son, Nick, and another to my friend, Catherine, who is having a birthday on the 14th.  John took a bunch to work with him and I'll take the rest to California tomorrow.  I'm visiting my son, Zach, getting his dogs' schedule changed to the new time.  Getting them to pee 10 minutes later every day for a week should makeup for that extra hour in no time.

  1. Oh, those look so good I can almost taste them. I made a similar recipe a few weeks ago and I loved them (as did others) but next time I'll try this recipe. Yours rise higher and I like that. So seasonal and make the house smell so good.

Have a good trip to California, and good luck with the dogs. Mine are more interested in eating time than potty time!

  2. Those pumpkin spice cookies look delicious - thanks for the link. I have printed the recipe and I will give it a try. I can smell them just thinking about it!
We don't have seasonal change of time here; I never imagined it would throw the pets out of routine, but I can see that it might. Have fun with the doggies!

  3. Hi Sanda - You probably know how much fun it will be to play with the dogs again - so any excuse will do. These really are the best Pumpkin Cookies ever. I used to buy them from that bakery when we lived in Portland, so I was really excited when they put the recipe on their blog.

  4. Hi Patricia - You are lucky that the government doesn't force you to switch your clocks around. Too bad we gave up Sundials - you can't mess with them. And Sanda is right that their meal time being arbitrarily changed is a big deal to a dog.
The smell of these cookies is pretty wonderful. I should have noted that I don't roll the dough into balls, just use a small Ice Cream scoop to form the cookies.

  5. I can just about smell those cookies from your photos! I've never been much bothered about the time switch until this year. My body seems quite confused for some reason. I remember opening the curtains one morning and seeing people walking dogs in the dark. I commented to Bill who reminded me that dogs don't understand daily light savings time. I'd never thought about it before. What a nuisance! I can't tell any benefits here in Britain as by the end of the month it's going to be pretty much dark most of the time anyhow.

  6. Hi Shelley - I just hope my problem with the time change doesn't get worse as I get older. I could move to Arizona where they don't do Daylight's Savings. I know I've said it before, but Bill's brain is amazing practical.

  8. The ones with the Whole Wheat Flour were prettier, but the ugly ones tasted better, as always!

  10. Hi Serene - I remember that we both have just as much trouble with the time change, both Spring and Fall. We'll be OK soon. I suggest Chocolate, medicinally, until our sleep gets back to normal.
