Oklahoma Has Varmints, Too

A couple of my favorite blogs post pictures of the protected wild animals that mess up their gardens.  Faux Fuchsia and Red Cardinal both have a plague of Bush Turkeys wreaking destruction on a regular basis, and just recently, Patricia of Red Cardinal had a Possum visit because she had unknowingly provided its favorite food, purple pansies.  I know how these gardeners feel, since in Seattle we were plagued with Raccoons, who burrowed under freshly laid sod night after night, never giving it a chance to root.  While I'm not surprised to find Raccoons are also here in Tulsa, and half expected to find it on the menu, I was surprised to find this flock of Canadian Geese.  The main problem with Canadian Geese visiting your yard, is the massive amount of goose poop they leave behind - and this stuff is slippery.  Think axle grease level of slippery.  Isn't Oklahoma home to thousands of hunters?  I'm told these Geese are delicious, by the bye.

  1. The Canada geese and the raccoons must range far and wide. My daughter has them in Ottawa too. I saw the mess when the raccoons got into the trash can. Now you mention it, a big fat goose could be nice and tasty. But I guess they are protected too ...

  3. Hi Patricia - I have to thank you for that picture of the Bush Turkey. I had read about them on Faux Fuschia's blog and thought she was just making them up. They don't look delicious - too skinny and scraggly.

  4. We have a lot of wildlife around here too. Living so close to the river, we have foxes, possums, raccoons, rabbits, and geese. I have an intense dislike for them. All they do is eat, poop, honk and hiss. They poop on the bike path to the point that it is scary to ride on when wet, not to mention that they will not get out of your way when you try to ride by or walk by. They hiss and try to intimidate you. Argh! Nasty critters!
