Saturday Chili Cook-Off

There was a Chili Cook-Off in Owasso (just north of Tulsa) today.  The guy with the Chili Pepper pants standing next to John, is the owner of the sports car with the Mr Chili plates.  We sampled tons of Chili and Barbecue.  And then voted for our favorite. Mine was the booth with the Frito Pie, something I had never experienced before moving to Oklahoma.  Now I'm hooked.  Here's how you make it - open a bag of Fritos, ladle in some Chili, add Cheese, Jalapeños, and maybe some Onions.  Done!  (Except for the Tums.)

There was also a Costume Contest for Dogs - but that guy in pink is really a pig, not the great costume I originally thought it was.

  1. Oh, I am so homesick now! Not just Frito chili pie, but BBQ!!! I don't think they even have Fritos here in England. That dog's coat is just 'dorable.

  2. What a fun day! Did John eat chilli (as I recall, he is extremely health conscious). A real pig; what a hoot. I've heard they make swell pets. Do you make your own chilli?

  4. Hi Shelley - I'm sorry to have made you homesick. At least it was for a really good time. John and I thought it was the best thing we had been to since moving here. There really is nothing like good BBQ, is there?

  5. Hi Sanda - John tried quite a few of the different Chili's - yes, I was surprised. You are so right - he is always so careful with what he eats. But not yesterday.
The pig was so cute and the only animal not on a lease. Its owner seemed to have complete control.

  6. Hi Silver Bunny - I'm glad to hear that you are behaving yourself! Even if it just to stop people from staring at you. When I lived in Seattle, we had lots of French speaking tourists. It always amused me when someone would ask me what they were saying. You don't have to speak French to know that they are just disapproving of everything that isn't French.

  8. I'm glad you were introduced to Frito Chili Pies when you came to Oklahoma. They are the best!

  9. Hi Patricia - I loved that little dog. Very spirited, but maybe not the best behaved. I would have taken her home in a minute.

  10. Hi Cindy - And I've introduced my children in California to Frito Pie, too. Oklahoma has so much to discover. Just tonight I ate at Duffy's - the best pancake ever and it was bigger than the plate. Good Times!
