Do You Knit? Are You Left-Handed? Do You Forgive Me For The Spider Picture? Because I've Got A Scorpion Picture That I Haven't Used - And Don't I Get Credit For That?

I don't know why I like yarn stores so much, but when I heard there was a new shop opening in the town north of Tulsa, I had to check it out.  It is full of beautiful stuff.
Now, anyone who know me, knows that I am left handed and as much as I like to knit, I have only ever learned one type of stitch.  I only purl.  The purl stitch is usually the back on any smooth knit sweater.  So if I want a smooth knit, I purl going one direction and then change hands and purl going the other direction.  This is kind of hard, and not my first choice for a craft project.  So mostly I just purl, use beautiful yarn, and make long, thin scarves.  Nice texture and really quick to do.
So here are some pictures of that pretty yarn and some antique yarn winding equipment to (hopefully) make up for that spider picture.  (Which I am deleting in a couple of day - it is seriously creeping me out.)

  1. what a great looking yarn shop! I wish I were there to go to it with you. I, too, love yarn shops. Interesting that you only purl, but hey, do whatever feels best for you. I used to knit garments but seemed they never fit like I wished them to, so now, like you, I just knit scarves and shawls. Beautiful yarns are a real weakness for me. I once managed a yarn shop and I bought so much that I still have some of it that I haven't used. That was 1982!

  2. Hi Sanda - I was really impressed with this shop. The decor was so sweet and the yarn was just luscious. I am thinking of taking a few lessons, so I can knit a lace alpaca scarf. Might be overly ambitious, but I should at least try.
Was it fun to manage a yarn shop? And I would think that if you haven't knit it into anything that has gone out of style, all your yarn was a good investment. It can only have gone up in price. Some years ago, the Wall Street Journal did an analysis on how much better an investment in good wool and linen fabric performed than the NYSE did.

  3. Beryl! My grandmother knits beautifully but I've never learned how. I'm much more a crochet person, but even with tar, I've never crocheted a sweater or anything. Now, however, you really have me wanting to pick up a crochet needle and make something pretty! Maybe a black widow sweater!!!! :). Creepy picture!! Hugs my friend!! Serene

  4. Hi Serene - Cute pun! I'm glad you're back to your blog - it is very entertaining, and we missed it. I like crocheting even better than knitting, but don't see sweater making in my future.

  5. I knit but mostly basic things, just finished two baby blankets. My Mom is a "lefty" and it is amazing some of the things I picked up. For instance, I sweep left handed. Yes, I hold the broom differently than right handed people do. I also took me years to figure out I was standing on the wrong side of the ironing board - I just set it up like Mama set it up. Didn't work too well for me :-)

  6. My friend Vivien is left handed and she knits, but I gather it was very hard for her to learn. One good thing is that learning new skillsl is supposed to be very good for your brain! I don't mind your spider photo, it's not ugly. I have some spiders and scorpion photos on my blog from a trip to Australia a few years ago... guess I'm not that squeamish - about those things, anyhow.

  7. Hi Darla - I saw those cute baby blankets on your blog. It is so confusing when a right-handed person does something left-handed. You just stare and try to figure out what's different. Funny about the ironing board. I have finally given up and let my husband do all the ironing.

  8. Hi Shelley - I love hearing about your friend Vivien. It just seems right that she would be left-handed. I forgot about your bug pictures - this year's trip to Australia was much tamer. Except for hurting your leg.
What is the most bothersome about needing to exercise my brain is that I keep forgetting the title to songs and such stuff, but I can very clearly remember how well my brain used to function.

  9. Beryl, regarding your question of if it was fun to manage a yarn shop: yes and no. Obviously, a typical retail operation involving all the bookkeeping, customers and lousy hours. But it was a joy to work with the merchandise; to help folks choose an appropriate; and see their projects. I didn't have to teach any classes, so that was a good thing. It was a "transitional" job, and made me know I did NOT want to have a career in retail.

  10. Hi Sanda - Careers in retail should pay way more than they do, if just for all the weekend work.

  11. I love yarn stores! I don't really know how to knit even though I did knit a scarf, but that does not count as what I call knitting..LOL I crochet:-) Knitting however is on my list of what to do come January. There is a group of women that get together and knit so I have decided to take my yarn and let them be the judge of what I should do with it. Beryl, if you ever get back to Paris I know a couple shops that sell beautiful yarn. I go in and just look..go figure:-)
