How On Earth Do These Fragile Things Survive?

This is an ornament that my brother Tony tracked down, because he remembers one just like it always hanging on our Christmas tree.  It is at least 40 years old.  The minute I saw it, I remembered.  Things like this will always make me happy.  Because Christmas was always such a happy time.  Still is!
What used to make me unhappy was that pesky Mayan Calendar implied prediction of World's end hanging over us.  So why am I disappointed that I no longer have the threat of the Mayan Calendar?  My point, and I do have one, is that even something unpleasant that has been part of your entire life's consciousnesses will be missed when it's taken away.  But I do feel relief, as I hope all do.
Happy 2013!

  1. What a beautiful ornament. So glad your brother was able to find one. Like you, I'm glad that pesky Mayan Calendar was wrong but not sure I'll miss all the talk about it!

  2. I love antique tree ornaments, and this is so pretty. It is lovely how they evoke such precious memories. Mayan calendar - bah humbug, I say!!

  3. That ornament looks very familiar, there's a good chance I have one similar to it. Mom collected at least one ornament a year and put dates on, starting in 1945, her and Daddy's first Christmas together. I still have 3-4 of those 1945 ornaments. She used to say she thought them very ugly back when she got them, but there wasn't anything else on offer. We used to shop the Christmas sales for special ornaments and I'm pleased to say her last Christmas with us we found some of the most beautiful ones. I'm not sure which ones I cherish more. I probably take better care of my Christmas ornaments than I do of my clothes, my car (when I had one) or my body...

  4. Beautiful ornament. It's kind of hard to have such ornaments if you hang them low enough for the dogs to run into them.

    Have a great New Year!

  5. How nice of your brother to find the special ornament for you. I saved a few special ornies to decorate with but gave the rest to my daughters a number of years ago. I try to make them each an ornament every year now to add to their collection.

  6. Hi Sanda - I never believed the myth, but it was always there and now it's not!

  7. Hi Patricia - I love the antique ornaments too - especially the bird ones with the wispy tails that you clip onto the tree branches. You could cover a tree with red ones and it would be lovely!

  8. Hi Shelley - Sweet memories! You and your mother must have had such fun. As I was putting away some of my ornaments today with all the bubble wrap and padded boxes inside other boxes, I was thinking that it was the memories that I was protecting, not just the glass.

  9. Hi Yogi - We used to have cats that would climb and sometimes topple the tree. We only hung unbreakable ones on the bottom branches. My mother used to hang the tree from the ceiling when she had dogs. That was fun.
Happy New Year to you too!
