Spider Patroling The Bathroom Or Rattlesnake De-Mousing The Laundry Room

Anyone who knows me know that I'm not afraid of bugs or spiders.  But my patience has been sorely tested (what do you suppose that old expression was originally supposed to mean - tested out a new horse until your muscles were all sore?   Or maybe I don't have the expression right at all - should it be sorely tempted - which also makes no sense?) by the massive number of tiny (and some not so tiny) beetle-like creatures that share our apartment in Tulsa.  So I was happy to come home last month and find a small spider had spun a web on the baseboard of my bathroom and had dealt firmly with a great deal of the beetles.  (Yes, he ate them!)  Since I would only be home for a few days before heading out again, I left him alone.  But unfortunately for Mr. Spider, my presence scared of his dinner and he had to be moved out to the front porch flower pot so he wouldn't starve.  Now my point, and I do have one, is that families understand these things about each other, even if no one else does, so I told my sister Lynne, (the one who lives in the state park with her husband the Park Ranger) my spider rescue story.  Not only did she agree that leaving a spider alone to do the exterminating was logical, she told that she had done the same thing when they moved into the Ranger House.  The house had all manner of mice and maybe some rats and other small undesirable roommates that had moved in between tenants.  But luckily, a small Rattlesnake moved into the corner of the laundry room through the same opening that the mice had found.  So for a week, she only did laundry at night (when all the snakes are asleep - as they teach you at Ranger School), until the house was varmint free.  Then she had the snake guy come and take away the Rattler, patched the little hole, and enjoys her pest free home.  Although the story seemed to freak-out her other friends, to me that made perfect sense.

  1. Mom used to tell me to leave the spiders alone, they were 'good' to have in the house. I wasn't sure about her logic, but I've never been scared of the small spiders that lived under my bed. Tells you how often we dusted under there... Poisonous spiders and snakes would be a different story for me. Insect jewellery doesn't do much for me either; that said, I do have some butterfly and dragonfly brooches...

    1. But Shelley, Butterfly and Dragonfly brooches are insect jewelry. ;) Of course I know you mean those huge, ridiculous Las Vegas pieces. Your mother was very wise! And not dusting under the bed? Even better.

  2. I'm ok with spiders. Snakes? Not so much. My daughter in So. CA just recently found a rattle snake on her patio. Her property backs up onto an open space/canyon. She'd been watering patio plants moments before so maybe the water caused the snake to move out of its shelter. (Shudder!)

    1. Hi Darla - Don't like a Rattlesnake during daytime, but at least they are afraid of people. And usually rattle at you to go away. My sister's dog had to be given Rattlesnake anti-venom treatments before being moved to Chino Hills as a precaution.

  3. Your jewelry is a riot! I once had a snake in the house; determined it was in a flower pot I brought in for the winter. Fortunately, it was a harmless little black snake. But you know, I'm afraid of all snakes. I think spider webs are so pretty and interesting.

    1. Oh Sanda, I didn't buy any of those gaudy bracelets. I was just killing time in Las Vegas. Since I'm not a gambler, trying on outrageous shoes and jewelry is my Vegas pastime. But I didn't buy any of it, because as we all know, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!"

  4. So glad you're posting again. We also have a pet spider. I was wondering why the rain brought ants into the bathroom but not the kitchen. Yesterday I found a tiny spider and her web beneath a cabinet, blocking their normal route in from the front door with a couple dozen pepper-looking spots beneath it of the ants she'd already kept out of my kitchen. Thanks spider! We agreed that she can stay as long as she likes.

    1. Hi Amanda! - Yeah Ms. Spider! Now all she needs is a friend to help in the bathroom.
