Great Picture And New Classification For Vegetables

This is my sister Lynne's family.  How cool to have them all together in this sweet, sweet picture!  The first adult on the left is Lynne, holding her newest grandchild.  And the sixth adult from the left is our mother, who has gone down 3 or 4 sizes since turning 90.  All it took getting the right personal trainer, Will, who by all reports is gorgeous. Although I never got a glimpse of him, even though when I was in Sacramento, we stopped by the health club a couple times.  But I have my sources and I have total faith in them.
Lynne has such beautiful kids - every one of them could make a living modeling.  (By the time they turned 11, they were all taller than I am!)  (Although the youngest makes a point to crouch down and make himself look shorter, cause he knows how much I liked it when I was taller than at least one of them - and it just cracks me up!)
On an entirely different subject, as I was eating that deliciously sweet corn on the cob last night, I realized that we needed a new classification for those vegetables that are so sweet, they can't possibly be in the same group as Brussel Sprouts and Kale.  I mean, really, there are carrots that are sweeter than most pears.  And who thinks Granny Smith apples should be considered a fruit?  Even the worst ear of corn is sweeter.  My point, and I do have one, is that I propose we take carrots, sweet potatoes and yams, corn, and all winter squash, especially Butternut - put them in their own group.  Desserts masquerading as side dishes.  Maybe you should add that Green Beans with equal amounts of Bacon and a sprinkle of toasted Almonds to this list - I could eat that for dessert any time.  And White Cheddar Garlic Mashed Potatoes.  The list goes on.......

  1. Lovely family photo, Beryl, and your Mum looks absolutely fantastic for 90! I know what you mean about those sweet vegetables - have to watch myself all the time with them. And I love my sweet daily carrot juice..

    1. Hi Patricia - She looks just as good in real life, too. I think it's the fact that she has always exercised must have something to do with it. My husband also has carrot juice everyday - his eye doctor thinks it even improved his eyesight. We are going to have to figure out what to do for the five weeks we are in Perth, or he could need new glasses.

  2. Aren't family pics just the best!? I agree, sweet veg is a different animal - I mean plant - to others. I sort of think of some veg as more starchy than others, ie corn and carrots. I wonder if starch and sweetness correlate? Not that I think white potatoes are sweet. Then that last bit is about savoury foods so wonderful they deserve to be considered a 'dessert'. I'd almost always rather have something cheesy or salty to something sugary, so I'd go for that option in a heartbeat!

    1. Hi Shelley - I don't know whether I think of white potatoes as sweet either, but I know I never waste time eating dessert if there are still mashed potatoes on the table - which I find even more irresistible with cheese!

  3. Haha, of course the classification is completely unrelated to taste... but you knew that! Your sister's family is so big! (in number, I mean) and how sweet that the youngest crouches down to make you the taller one. What a gallant young man!

    1. Having 7 brothers and sisters, most of us had fairly small families - (with 2 sons and 1 daughter, I have one of the largest). Being almost the youngest, she grew up with a house full and that's what she decided to have herself. And they are all such nice people!

    1. Hi Serene - Green Beans aren't the only vegetable that works with Bacon - I had a salad at a potluck that put Bacon together with Broccoli. That was fabulous! Hugs back!

  6. Great family photo. Making memories is fun. Hope the heat in Sac. didn't do you in. Then again you are probably used to it. This is the only time of year I really like corn, it is so delicious when so fresh.

    1. Hi Darla - It's funny how fast your thermostat adjusts when you move. Since moving to Oklahoma, I just can't think of Sacramento as hot!
We got that corn at Whole Foods at 4 for $1, and it was the best!
