Keep Calm And Lower Your Standards

I was getting out the Christmas decorations and found this one that I made a few years ago in Seattle, which was displayed on our lovely mantle.  It was actually more work than it seems, different color inks and punches and trimming around images and lots and lots of glue, all tied together with a green dotted organdy ribbon.  Until I found the "S" in my craft room, I hadn't noticed the misspelling, nor had anyone else.  But this was long after Christmas stuff had been packed away again, so I just tucked the "S" away in one of the boxes and figured I'd fix it the next year.  For the last couple years, I have had either the misspelled banner or the square with the "S", but never both at the same time.  And this year the aren't even in the same state - yes, the "S" is in Oklahoma and the banner is in California.  Without that gorgeous traditional mantle behind it, it's more obvious, but I'm displaying it anyway.  Because imperfection is a kind of strength and displays a generous spirit allowing everyone to feel better about themselves.  Which is a very Chritmas way to be!
Any one who knows me knows of my fondness for a good Pub Quiz - not a drinker, so the Pub is the best venue for me for a quiz, since our team is competing with lots of other teams that are not operating at their best.  Really like the Old Dubliner in Long Beach, which is part of a chain.  Taking the dogs for a major walk can take me past the Tustin one, which no longer has a quiz, but had this neat shirt for sale for the window.  A new to me variation on the "Keep Calm And Carry On" motto which I have always liked.

  1. I love your banner, Beryl, and it is obvious the work that went into making it. And the missing S is hardly noticable - it seems we read the whole word anyway and if most of the letters are there, we are fine with it. Which explains a lot of mistakes in editing which one comes across, particularly in one's own blog, I fear!

    1. Hi Patricia - I think you just pinpointed my problem with Auto-correct - if the word is just misspelled most people will know what you mean anyway. With Auto-correct, you never know what you get.

  2. Love this missive, Beryl. You would do well in London with your pub quizz skills, that is highly prized over there. Also agree about lowering standards, I am sitting here looking at blogs rather than faffing about with stuff.

    1. Hi Jody - Desperately wanted to do the Pub Quiz I walked by in Perth, Australia, but quickly realized how little I could answer about pop Aussie culture.

  3. Love that attitude 'imperfection is a kind of strength and displays a generous spirit'! I doubt I'd ever have that banner and that letter together again and I don't even live in two different places! Hmmm....I've just looked at my gallery wall and realised Bill dusted yesterday. Sweet of him, but now I have to decide how strong and generous I'm prepared to be...

    1. Hi Shelley - How sweet of your husband to dust. I used to think it was just a joke when a wife would say that her husband did a job just badly enough that she would never ask them again - on purpose.

  4. Funny how we see/read what we expect so find isn't it? I say display that great banner. If anyone ever dare make a comment tell them it was a test to see how observant they are.

    Like the tee shirt.

  5. I love that banner Beryl, I bet each time you see the mis-spelling it makes you smile, & the fact that no one else notices!

    1. Hi Sanda - I put it down around a small Christmas tree on the kitchen counter. Very festive! Thanks for the baking comment. I promised my sister that I do some Divinity like my mother's - with chopped up bits of cherries.

  7. I agree that when standards are too high it can make everyone feel uncomfortable. Well, that's my excuse anyhow :) I love your banner!
