Dressing Dilema

Cowboy Casual Holiday - That's right - that's what the invitation to this year's party given by John's company for the Holidays says.  It's always been a big, fancy deal - sequins and velvet and heels.  (And not just on the women - some of these Tulsa guys have big heels on their black formal boots.)  But after the party, we all have rooms to stay overnight in this huge lodge, with an enormous room with card games, puzzles, pool - you name it and it's there.  So this year, I opened the invitation and this phrase jumps out at me.  Now, anyone who know me knows that I'm not a user of profanity.  (I don't mind it when other's use it - often it is the only appropriate possibility.)  I save it for when my life is in danger and I need that extra jolt to kick me into action - like when the truck was coming at me on the freeway just before we got to Roseburg, Oregon, at 2 am on the way to my sister Claire's wedding.  But - what the H*** is Cowboy Casual Holiday??

  1. Black hat optional? (or is it white hat? I always confuse the two....)

  2. Oh my gosh, Anne! I forgot about the significance of the hat color - heck, I even forgot I about a hat!

  3. Oh do share what you wear, I have no idea what Holiday Cowboy would involve. We are off to New Zealand next weekend for hubs similar corporate function. They like to surprise with the unusual, so who knows what we'll find?

  4. That is a good question! Since I don't have any idea either, let's leave it to the cowgirls to provide an answerww. Could it possibly mean sequins allowed?

  5. Beats me. Don't press your jeans? No bolo tie with the shirt? Does anyone even wear a bolo tie anymore? I will be interested to read your report after the affair is over.

  6. Well, I grew up in Oklahoma and I've never heard of this dress code. You know the drill though: jeans, boots, checked shirt with pointy yoke and snap-down pockets, string tie, cowboy (girl) hat. If you want to throw money at it, head for Cattleman's restaurant in Southside OKC and look in the western outfitters in the same street. Personally, I'd head for the thrift shop. If you don't want to do the boot/hat thing, you could opt for a full skirt a la square dancer. Look forward to hearing what you work out!

  7. Hi Patricia - Can't wait to hear about your company party. Isn't being a corporate wife nerve wrecking?

  8. Hi Sanda - I am a Leo, so am hoping I can work some sequins in there somewhere. This party is the main place where I wear my sequins every year, but they are usually in the form of a chic black sequin jacket.

  9. Hi Darla - I think I might start looking at Western shirts - maybe the Goodwill would be a good place to start? I could probably make the search go faster if I brought along a metal detector.

  10. Hi Shelley - Of course - a skirt! Thank you!! Tight jeans would have meant I couldn't eat as much or party as long. And it will be easy to add some bling to a top, a la Dolly Parton.

  11. Hi Bella - Cummerbund is a great idea - maybe in a red silk gingham. With a denim skirt. And all I need to find is a bead store for the hardware to make a Bolo tie - stick some green turquoise and red coral on it and I'm done. I hope my husband knows what he's going to wear.

  12. Daisy Dukes. Definitely. :)

But I vote for sequins. Tacky ones. Sounds like a Goodwill adventure.

  13. Goodwill, of course - but not your little one. I'm doing one of the BIG Goodwill stores in Tulsa - or maybe Broken Arrow. They might have more sequins. That's where I got the tacky Christmas sweater with all the sparkles for Cynthia, one of my Water Aerobics instructors. Even her daughter used it for one of those Tacky Holiday Parties. (I thought these parties, were a myth, but I've been told they are a tradition. I haven't been to one, but I keep hoping for an invite.)
