That Girl

Remember Marlo Thomas in That Girl, the gentle sitcom about an actress trying to make it in New York? She had a nice apartment, sweet boyfriend, and terrific clothes. I can't remember who her costume designer was, but I would sketch every outfit. I'd try to figure out how to recreate my favorites - some of which I did. Like that coral dress with the white bands. But that dress with the sleeveless coat was just impossible. The sleeves were pieced, not printed. Just too much! And there it was this morning, on MEtv. After Perry Mason but before Kokak. Now if they would just run some MacMillan and Wife, I could swoon over Susan St James' clothes, too. I copied one of her coats in white denim with a fake fur lining - hooded and zipped up the front. Glad I don't have a picture, because my memories of that coat are so much better than it could ever have been.

Is that Joan Blondell?

Adorable kitchen in the background.

  2. I love that you used to sketch and copy some of That Girl's clothes! I'll bet your creations were brilliant. I've been known to play that game myself, once or twice!!

  3. OK you have me hooked totally. Those photos look adorable in every way, I'm going to find this on netflix. Sort of reminds me of the cuteness of New Girl, though her apartment in very utilitarian.

  4. Hi Shelley - I'm right there with you on wanting the hair. When she got rid of her bangs, I got rid of my bangs. (Probably the last time I was current on fashion.) I thought it was Joan - but I didn't have the credits recorded. I just loved her voice.

  5. Hi Patricia - I did make some good stuff, and in those days I was slender and flat chested and could wear anything. (Before kids!)

  6. Hi Jody - It's much funnier now than when it was new. Her boyfriend comes over, has dinner, gives her a chaste kiss goodnight, and goes home. He says things about her hiring a new PR guy without his "permission". Hilarious! If you get MEtv, it's on every morning.

  7. How clever of you that you could look at a clothing item and copy it! I loved That Girl and The Mary Tyler Moore shows. The female characters in those two programs were role models for many young girls, including me!

  8. Hi Sanda - I forgot about Mary Tyler Moore's clothes. They were great. For a few years I used to dress in her style, and my girlfriend dressed more like Rhoda. Not on purpose, and we didn't notice until some guy commented on it. I should have appreciated those days, when I could wear any style I liked, without worrying about hiding figure flaws.
