More Garden Success Results In Odd Sandwiches

Look at the Purple Onion I grew!
And this is one of the smaller basil plants - from a tiny seed.  Magic, huh?
I hope these tomatoes are ripe for my picnic this Sunday.
I got tired of trying to find Fennel Bulbs for my Green Lentil Salad, so I grew my own from seeds. Maybe I should have picked it earlier, but it's so pretty that I don't care.
Decided to fry that onion up and then had to figure out what I wanted to eat with it.  Did you grow up on odd sandwich combinations?  We had Chopped Black Olives and Peanut Butter.  Green Chili and Butter.  And there was Mayonnaise and Onion, or Mayonnaise and Egg.  So I decided that maybe Browned Sliced Onion would be good with a Fried Egg as long as there was Mayonnaise in it.  I was either very hungry or lucky, because it tasted great.  Did I mention that John is in Chicago on business this week, so I am cooking for one?  I got quite spoilt having him around for so long.  Good Times!

  1. Anything with an egg is alright with me - I just had four of them with baked beans - the Heinz ones from Britain. Peanut butter and olives? you were an exotic family. In NZ though we did vegemite and lettuce. Or vegemite and potato crisps

    1. I love eggs and Baked Beans. I didn't realize it when I was growing up (actually I have just started realizing how different we were), but with a French mother and Czech father, our menu was nothing like our friends'. When I was young, my Grandparents had something called Marmite (I think) that was doled out sparingly, since it was pretty hard to come by. You might be getting Nutella and butter on your toast or this Marmite stuff, and wow - was there a difference. But eating at their house was always an adventure.

  2. It looks pretty good to me. Love taste of onions, ESP carmalized ones. Never had any sandwich combinations you mention. As a kid I ate peanut butter/banana (Elvis ate those didnt he? But we didn't fry ours like he did) we also ate pineapple sandwiches but my fav was just a plain old mayonnaise sandwich which I still like!!

    1. These are the best onions ever! I can't believe I never even tried to grow them before. I thought I had never even heard of pineapple in a sandwich, and them suddenly remembered having cream cheese mixed with pineapple on bread. Yum!

    1. These are the first home grown I have ever had. I know how much better the tomatoes are going to be, but didn't expect such superior onions.

  4. My step-son is famous for his weird combos and for not liking yellow food... I've always eaten pretty traditionally and each most things, but not together. If there is anything strange about my eating style it is that I like to eat one thing at a time.

    1. One of my best friends eats everything separately. I wonder if it's astrological? (She has a February birthday.) Not liking yellow food? But that's the best of the M&M's.

  5. Sounds delicious, I'll have to give it a try; I love onions, any way, any time. You are quite the green fingers, I should fly you over here as a garden consultant!

    1. I have had quite a bit of luck, but until moving to Oklahoma, the only thing I could reliably grow was Rosemary - which I almost never cook with.

  6. Wow, I thought I ate weird sandwich combos but black olives and peanut butter...well, have to think about that one. I've been eating fresh tomatoes,Miracle Whip (not mayo) and peanut butter. Delicious because it reminds you of bologna.

    1. My husband and I differ on which creamy white dressing to use on a sandwich. I have to make two separate bowls of tuna salad, so he have his with Miracle Whip. Considering how delicious the fresh tomatoes are right from the garden, I can imagine they'd be good with peanut butter.

  8. Your garden is doing so well. Ours is all leaves and no produce at this point. We get a heavy marine layer every day by the Bay this time of year and a late summer. Happens every year but every year DH seems hopeful that it will change. What an optimist!
