Hatch Chilies

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Chilies.  Some more than others.  And this is not a macho thing - I'm OK with the heat, but it's the flavor of the variety that does it for me.  So I was pretty excited when I found Hatch Chilies from New Mexico at my Tulsa Whole Foods.  I had picked up some at the Whole Foods in Irvine, California, but didn't expect to find them here, as experience has shown me.  The Whole Foods in Tulsa may be the greatest thing in Tulsa, but it is less than half what a Whole Foods store is on the West Coast.  And not only did I get Hatch Chilies, but they had Chicken Chorizo too - what could I do but a Chili Chorizo Omelet.  With a side of figs and raspberries.

Do you cook on a gas stove?  In Southern California, I do.  And I forget how difficult it is to cook on an electric stove.  Getting the butter properly foamy for an omelet is nearly impossible.  In the time it takes to take the picture, foamy turns into burned.  And your omelet turns out a little rustic - but it was still delicious.

  1. Beryl, I used to live in NM and I remember visiting Hatch. My mom told me it was the chile capital of the US! I'm a HUGE chile fan myself...living in NM made me one and my love of Mexican food just seems a natural fit! Your omelet sound DELICIOUS! Have you ever had huevos rancheros? Silly question, right? :D Hugs my friend, Serene BTW, I loved your comment on my Candy Bars blog! It's true! Believer or not, the New Testament offers some powerful insights on living (some of which seem to go against our baser instincts!)

  2. Hi Serene - I always wanted to live in New Mexico - I love the food, I love the jewelry, the clothes, and the culture. Now that you remind me, I'll make huevos rancheros next Sunday.
Glad you liked my comment. Your blogs are so well thought out, interesting, and nicely written. They make you think. I knew you'd understand what I meant.

  3. Hi, Beryl ! Thanks for commenting on my blog ... while I was on yours ! I had to leave it momentarily and there you were ! Anyway, I think you're lucky to be able to enjoy chile ; I use to love spicy things but as I advance in age, I find that spicy things hate me ! My whole system rebels against it. Bland food, bland life for me from now on ? By the way, I cook on gaz nowadays and love it. I couldn't go back to an electric stove, too difficult to manage !xx

  4. Hi SB - That is pretty funny that we were both doing the sane thing at the same time. Usually I'd be at water aerobics at that time, but I had to take my husband to the airport at 5 this morning. And then slept through them after I got back, so was reading my favorite blogs instead. Sad that spicy foods don't agree with you anymore. It would really change my eating habits if that happened to me.

  5. Hi Beryl,
I only had gas for cooking food once in my life, but loved, loved, it. Stuck with electric now. Your lunch with chilis looks delicious. Like some heat in foods, but the really hot peppers don't altogether agree with me. Your photos are looking great these days!!

  6. Hi Sanda - Thanks for the compliment on my photos, They are getting better with practice. I did wish I had a faster camera, since all too often the picture I wanted was gone before the camera took it. But instead of paying for a new camera, I have been concentrating on snapping sooner.
