Two Nights Out This Week At The Pub - How Do The English And Irish Do It?

Last night, Andrew, our favorite Quizmaster for the Southern California Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz retired.  We couldn't miss this, even though it was on a Wednesday, not our usual night.  So for two nights in a row, we Pub Quizzed.  Fun!  And we came in first both times, without a clue how we did it.  Some weeks, the answers are things we are really familiar with - Ruben Sandwich ingredients - Corned Beef, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut, Russian or 1000 Island Dressing, on Rye Bread.  Could not believe how many other constants answered Pastrami.  Too bad for them.  But this week, most stuff was unknown to any of us.  Sports questions, which are only answered with confidence when my Sweetie is there, can  only be guessed at, which is what we did,  But I guess we were more right than the other teams.

But my point, and I do have one, is that we were in a strange place this week, and I had to share one of the most unusal things I have ever seen.  For $2 you could use one of those Crane Games that usually retrieve stuffed animals and occasionally get infiltrated by unattended children skinny enough to climb up in them, and catch a live lobster which they would cook for you in their kitchen.  A $2 lobster dinner if you had the skill.  I did not have enough to drink to properly enjoy this.  But that made driving home possible.

  1. Beryl, first let me say that when I heard of the storm named Beryl, the first thing I thought of was you!
The pub quiz sounds like such fun.
The lobster thing sounds quite strange. I must admit that I have a problem with lobsters having to be cooked alive. It just bothers me to think of it and I cannot eat them.

  2. Wow! A lobster crane game? Now that's a first! Isn't it fun sometimes to do stuff during the week!?! We really NEVER do that, with work and everything, but it does make the week seem not so dull....congratulations on your win! I love trivia!!! Hugs sweet lady! ~Serene

  3. The pub quiz sounds like such fun and congratulations on your win! I would have passed on the lobster crane game, but what a deal for those who choose to participate!

  4. A colleague who visited China talked about how all the restaurants had you decide which fish / lobster / chicken they would kill to make you a fresh meal. She went vegetarian immediately, being too soft to choose the victom. Well done you, winning the quizes; also for being designated driver. The answer to the question in your title is that a huge number of them don't; there is a lot better public transport around; also a benefit system that gives a person more money each week if they are alcoholic, owing to having a mental disability or something.

  6. Hi Debbi - The pub quizzes are very fun and it is interesting how varied the questions are. This week, they had pictures of reallity stars and you were supposed figure out which show they were from. We did not do well. Which gave some other team a chance to win. Actually, there were 6 teams that got this round 100% correct. I think we got 2 right. We had better luck with the other 7 rounds, but still didn't win a prize. When a Kansas question came up, I actually thought of you (and Terri). It was a question from a girl that one of my son's friends likes asking me how I liked Kansas - she thought it was the same as Oklahoma, I guess.

  7. Hi Serene - I love a midweek break even when it's just a meal out. If it wasn't for the quizzes, we would never do it, too.
My husband brought my package to me, and the minute I opened that scarf, my daughter picked it up and started matching it to her tops. It was beautiful, but it looks like I'm going to have to buy another one for myself..

  8. Hi Sanda - We have a pretty good team and usually do win a prize, which is the top three teams. But this week we were fourth, which was the fault of not having a single reality TV fan on our team, against a room full of them. We only knew the returning veteran from Dancing With The Stars, and I had seen Scotty Mc(Something or other)from American Idol on the Tonight Show, so that was our only 2. But that's part of the fun, you never know who will win.

  9. Hi Shelley - My relaxation between the work of wedding prep, has been to read as many Phryne Fisher books as the Orange County Library system has. Thanks you, again!
If I was in China, I would eat vegan, just because I'm nervous about the parts of the animal they think are edible. My cousin on my mother's side had no problem putting the swimming fishes to the chopping block when she was there, but drew the line at having them stare up at her from her soup!
good point about public transport in England. And I know in Seattle, they handed out very generous welfare payment to all the drunks in the city. Then they panhandled when that money ran out. It got to be a popular destination, so the city had to change back to providing housing and much smaller payments.
