Fitbit? Checking Out New Technology

Friends are always asking me what my secret is to keeping my shape after all these years.   No, not like you'd think - you see my shape is sort of short and round, like a peeled Russet Potato.  And how I can stay this shape with all my exercise and healthy eating is a mystery to them.  I do Water Aerobics five days a week for two hours each day.  I walk the treadmill for miles on the weekends.  I never use salt and rarely have sugar unless it is specifically dessert (and anyone who knows me knows that I always have dessert) - so much so that even carrots are annoyingly sweet to my taste buds.  Oh, there is my Chutney addiction which might add just a tiny bit of sugar to my diet.  (So maybe diet might be a factor.)  And I live up a flight of stairs which are climbed constantly, often lugging groceries.  Yes, it is a mystery.  So I decided to use this device called a "Fitbit".  Amanda asked for one for Christmas after careful research.  Seems that teaching 5 days a week at Cal isn't leaving enough time for scheduled exercise, so she decided to track how much she was getting from normal everyday activity.  Which for her includes a lot of bike riding, like everyone else who lives in Berkeley.  Well, her brother Nick (my oldest) got her one for Christmas and she loves it.
The Fitbit also tracks your sleep, and that is actually why I had already purchased this one.  Now am I the only one who watches her significant other sleep like a rock and then wake up and complain about not having slept a wink?  I was planning on strapping this little guy on his wrist (yes, he does sleep that soundly) and checking in the morning to see how he'd done.  But instead I will be checking to see how I've done.  (After the requisite waiting period of 6 weeks while I dither about trying new technology, of course!  So that would be April, right?)  Good Times!

  1. He he, so funny Beryl, from one 'short and round' to another...I'm not sure if I 'd like a Fitbit; it would make me feel too accountable!

    1. Hi Patricia - You do a wonderful job of choosing your clothes - I can't imagine you as round at all! Still haven't opened the package, so can't tell anything about it, but agree that accountability will be an issue,

  2. This Fibit might be a good investment for keeping on track! What will they think of next? Do report back on your results.... After April, of course!

    1. Hi Sanda - I suspect it will be like when a diet doctor makes you keep a food diary at the beginning and you find out you are doing a lot of the wrong things. We'll see. (After April. ;}

  3. Looking forward to hearing all about this. The thought that came to mind though was the electronic tags that are used here to ensure offenders are keeping to curfew rules! After that, I guess I'm wondering what you will do with the information it gives you?

    1. Hi Shelley - Like an ankle monitor? How funny! You are supposed to plug the Fitbit into a computer and track results. (Still haven't unpacked it.)

  4. I've see these talked about by folks who have yet to buy one. It will be very interesting to have a first hand report when you use yours.

  5. Beryl, so nice of you to drop by. I love that you're in Tulsa (though being from SoCal I can't imagine that you are). I dream of living beachside in Carlsbad, but it is just a dream. I have a little house in Tulsa as my kids and grandkids are there. It gives me a place to stay when I'm there. Can't wait to read more from you. Donna

    1. Hi Donna - I do love being in Tulsa, but still have an apartment in Southern California to be closer to my kids occasionally. I know what you mean about beachside in Carlsbad - nothing quite like the ocean. (IKEA is coming to Kansas City this year which should be much easier than Dallas.)

    1. Hi SB - Can't help but chuckle at your description since I have a wonderful antique wardrobe in my California apartment living room, and now know that I will never look at it the same way again.

  7. That sounds really interesting, I hope you tell us all what results you get, I've never heard of it!
    And crikey, you do a lot of exercise Beryl, I only manage a 30 minute swim per week!

    1. Hi Jay - When my kids were the age of yours, I had no time for exercise either. All my time was spent driving them everywhere and waiting until it was time to go home again. The best of times was when I could watch them participate, even though I never quite understood the rules of whatever game they were playing. Such Good Times!
