Porter Peach Festival Parade In Pictures

  1. Looks like it was a great fily day. What are moink balls on a stick? Must be a regional delicacy?

  2. Hi Beryl,

This looks like fun...and peaches galore I bet! Yes, what is a moink ball on a stick? So far peaches have been good this year from Georgia and the Carolina's, so like you I have been baking some delicious summer deserts. My favorites so far are: the peach crisp from The Gardener's Cottage and the Barefoot Contessa's peach and plum crostada.

A while back you had mentioned a small sewing machine that you liked and would purchase when yours putters out (my words:-). Would you mind sharing with me again what the name is. I am looking to purchase one. Thanks, Beryl..j

  3. Hi Sanda - A Moink Ball is a Beef (Moo) Meatball wrapped with Bacon (oink) - hence the compound word "Moink". I had never heard of them before last year at the same Festival, when my sister was visiting from California. My Brother-in-law, (also named John like my husband) (which was my Daddy's name too), got himself a stick of Moink Balls and declared them amazing. So you must be right about the being regional, and a delicacy.

  4. Hi Jeanne - As to the Moink Ball on a Stick, see above. The peaches this year have been wonderful. I know that Barefooted Contessa's recipe, but haven't tried it. I never have mixed Plums and Peaches - it's either one or the other. I should venture outside my fruit comfort zone and make some.
My favorite of the small sewing machines if the Janome Jem. It's so light and sews a great seam. It comes in a few different styles. I would get the Platinum, since I am so used to having the "Needle up, Needle down" feature, that I would spend an extra $100 to have it. But I have used the Silver and liked it a lot. And I owned the Gold and liked that even better. (It got loaned to someone, but became too awkward to get it back that I decided to just get myself the Platinum eventually.)

  5. Me again....do they hem jeans easily and/or zippers?

  6. They are good with zippers - but nothing hems jeans easily except the industrial machines they use in jeans factories. But they are as good at it as an expensive Bernina. Use an ordinary hammer and pound the seam allowance flat before turning up the hem and use something to level out the pressure foot when you are sewing over the seam. There is something called a Jeans-a-ma-jig that you can use for this. If you hem even one pair of jeans, it's worth buying.

  7. What in the world is a moink ball? And is there a queen for this parade?

  8. Hi Terri - I was trying to just do pictures, but considered captioning the picture of the Queen of the Porter Peach Festival, with her court. They are in the white convertible. One Queen, one Princess, and one Junior Princess, who looks about 5 years old. (Peach Pit?)
Moink Balls are Barbecued Meatballs, wrapped with Bacon on a stick. I was told that they are addictive, so I didn't eat one. If only I had been so wise before I ate my first Krispy Kreme Donut, fresh out of the fryer. Luckily, those donuts lose all their appeal to me when they cool.
