These Are (Not) My People - Not That There's Anything Wrong With That

John and I have a few movies that resonate with one or both of us - and usually there is one particularly special scene that we will be able to mimic credibly.  In Grease, it's Beauty School Dropout sung by Frankie Avalon, where John does the words and I do the steps.  In Tin Cup it's that scene in the Waffle House where Kevin Costner tells Rene Russo that he eats there because, "These are my people!"  (Check out the look on her face on my TV.)  We started using a variation of this phrase the first time he took me to a Waffle House, outside of Little Rock, Arkansas, where I couldn't help but mutter, "These are not my people!"  And please don't imagine that there is any value judgement attached to this - different (from me) isn't worse or better, just different.  My point, and I do have one, is that however much I enjoyed that Velveeta Omelet, I can't imagine ever returning to the Waffle House outside of Little Rock.  But I would go back to Little Rock; I enjoyed visiting Little Rock.  The Barbecue was fabulous!
Just saying that the Cowboy Church is a great idea, but not one I'm likely to join.  For one thing, I have high arches and can't seem to find Cowboy Boots to fit.  And Jeans are just too casual for me as church wear.  Not to mention keeping a straight face as the preacher rides in on his horse, which works just fine, since the floor is, well, actually there isn't a floor - it's dirt.  Great motto - "Ridin With Faith."  Not my people, but still pretty cool!

  1. Movies that resonate with both--now that's a subject dear to my heart. My HB and I have many but the one from which we constantly quote lines back and forth to each other is Famiy Man with Nicholas Cage and Teo Leone. Also Moonstruck.
Funny post, like your descriptions of Cowboy Church!

  2. Hi Sanda - Moonstruck is a favorite of ours too. I like to watch Family Man around Christmas, when I indulge myself with constant holiday style movies. One movie I need to get for us to watch is Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. It sounds like another good couples one.

  3. My mother doesn't know how to leave comments, so she often emails them to me. Here's her boot info:
"I looked at your blog last night. Is it possible that I know something you do not or is that simply an excuse because you don't want to own any cowboy boots. When you remember where you got your high arches, it shouldn't surprise you that I know that Dan Post and Tony Llama make boots for cowboys with high arches. To wear any others you need flat feet. Now that I have displayed my vast store of boot knowledge....Love, Maman"

  4. Ahhh...I thought for sure Frankie Avalon was going to marry me when I graduated from HS..LOL...and Rene and Kevin made a great couple in Tin Cup. Yep, there are those places that you visit and love the food and town but would not move too. I am with you on this one:-) However, I definitely would love to hang out with your mom...mine continues to amaze me with her vast knowledge about ...almost everything..LOL

Again, thanks for the sewing information! j

  5. Hi Maman! Thanks for the boot brands that work for high arches. It's not just an excuse, but a reaction to having a foot stuck in a cowboy boot and needing a couple of shoe salespersons to get it off. Next time I'm in California, I show you how to log in to Google and make comments. (Since you have a gmail email address, it's pretty simple!)

  6. Hi Jeanne - I think if you were to marry a star, Frankie would have been the best. Not a breathe of scandal in decades! A little short for some woman, but so what - it's their loss.
I would like to think that our moms know more because they have lived longer, but I think that's just a lame excuse.

  7. At our house, we playfully call the Waffle House the "Awful House". The last couple of times I've eaten in one was on Christmas Day as it is often the only restaurant open on that day. I think its a great place to people watch.

  8. One of my Tulsa friends told me about that nickname. I haven't eaten at any Tulsa Waffle Houses yet, but thought I would try. When I do, I'll be sure to people-watch.

  9. My experience with Waffle House has always been pretty good - and Bill really enjoyed his few experiences. I tend to find them near motels when travelling through the US. Can't say I would visit them otherwise if going out to eat. Denny's would probably win if we had a choice. There are loads of restaurants I've frequented in my younger days where the other clientele were a bit scary; one learns early on not to stare. I may even have looked a bit scary myself, who knows?

I'm sure those folks worshipping at the Cowboy church are lovely, but I can recall any number of items I had the impossible task of keeping a straight face in church - the horse would do me in, I'm certain.
